A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatments, such as alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss

The Steps You Should Take
STEP 1
Contact the benefits department for your health insurance:
- Does your policy cover a cranial prosthesis?
- If it does, what type of prosthesis is covered (I.e. human hair wigs, synthetic wigs, etc.)
- How much of the cost do they cover?
- What specific terminology for a wig should the prescription contain?
- Is there required documentation they need to submit your claim? What is it?
STEP 2
Get a prescription from your doctor.
- Make sure to use to correct terminology "CRANIAL PROTHESIS" (insurance will not cover wigs because wigs are considered fashion items and is not medically necessary.)
- Include procedure code A9282 on your prescription.
- Have your doctor write a note explaining that your prosthesis is not for cosmetic reasons, but for your emotional well-being.
STEP 3
ORDER YOUR MEDICAL WIG
- Place your order for the wig of your choice.
- Reply to your order confirmation with a copy of your prescription from your medical provider
- We will provide you with an invoice with the proper notations for insurance.
STEP 4
SUBMIT DOCUMENTS
Submit all required documents to your medical insurance provider.
